Andrea Swenson (??? 1977 – November 9, 1990)
Sent by her adoptive mother to the Attachment Center at Evergreen (ACE), Andrea was put through the usual “two-week intensive,” but then diagnosed as so “damaged” that she had to stay on for periodic treatments at ACE, and live with AT-trained therapeutic foster parents (TFPs), at a cost to the family’s insurance company of $3,500 a week. Supposedly, Andrea made slow progress in the arrangement, until the insurance payments ran out. Whereupon, Watkins and the TFPs began pressuring the adoptive family to allow the TFPs to adopt her — and thereby get new insurance coverage.
One day in November 1990, Andrea returned to her foster home from school and reported to the TFPs that she had been sexually molested at school, which they regarded as typical “Attachment Disorder” behavior — false, manipulative, and attention-getting.
The next day, Andrea overdosed on aspirin. She was in convulsions and delirious the next morning, but the TFPs did not attend her, and instead went bowling that afternoon. While they were gone, a relative visited the house and found Andrea dead in a hallway.
Lucas Ciambrone (??? 1988 – May 13, 1995)
Lucas was diagnosed as “RAD” by Foster Cline, a notable attachment disorder clinic whose practitioners vehemently defended the adoptive parents’ treatment of him. Lucas was starved, bitten, beaten, and forced to sleep in a bathroom that had been stripped of towels, soap, toilet paper and light bulbs. He weighed 27 pounds at time of his death.
Krystal Ann Tibbets (??? 1992 – July 7, 1995)
Krystal was beaten to death by her adoptive father, who was taught to lie across his daughter (who weighed a total of 35 pounds) in what is known in AT circles as “compression therapy,” and punch his fist into her abdomen, which is one technique of “visceral manipulation” (VM), encouraged by attachment therapists.
David Polreis (??? 1994 – February 11, 1996)
David was beaten to death by his adoptive mother. The Attachment Center she was working with testified that David had RAD, and the mother had acted in self defense, despite the fact that she had first claimed that the child had beaten himself.
Roberta Evers (??? 1991 – June 13, 1998)
Roberta was severely sexually abused by her biological family–she’d been raped by her mother with a broom handle and also by her father and his friends. She was diagnosed with RAD, and in attempt to “manage her,” her adoptive parents restrained her at night, tying her hands and feet to the bed and putting her inside a “net” (which the prosecution later determined as a cage) as “protection.” Roberta choked on her own vomit (she was known to vomit often) and, unable to clear her own windpipe due to the restraint, died in her bed.
Candace Elizabeth Newmaker (??? 1990 – April 18, 2000)
A ten year old adopted girl killed by asphyxiation during an attachment therapy ‘intensive’ involving a ‘rebirthing’ script in 2000, during which Candace was wrapped in blankets and required to struggle to be reborn, against the weight of several adults.
Viktor Alexander Matthey (??? 1993 – October 31, 2000)
Employing techniques recommended by AT parenting specialists, Viktor was force fed a mixture of beans and barley from a baby bottle, a common “reparenting” technique. Other punishments included dehydration and cat-o’-nine-tails whippings. Viktor was routinely locked and left overnight in an unheated basement, which had no lights and no toilet. If he screamed to get out, his adoptive parents put duct tape over his mouth. One day, after another night of being left in the unheated basement, Viktor stopped breathing. He arrived at the hospital in cardiac arrest, where workers discovered that he was covered with 40 cuts, bruises and abrasions. An autopsy found recent fractures and older fractures that had healed. The medical examiner’s office determined that he died from cardiac arrhythmia due to hypothermia. AT advocates stated during the case that Viktor was “not normal” and had “emotional and developmental issues that require[d] extraordinary interventions.”
Logan Lynn Marr (??? 1996 – January 31, 2001)
Using techniques they’d learned from attachment therapists, Logan’s adoptive parents wrapped her body and covered her mouth in duct tape, strapped her to a chair and left her in the basement where she suffocated to death.
Cassandra Killpack (??? 1998 – June 9, 2002)
Cassandra was restrained to a chair and forced to drink vast quantities of water by her adoptive parents as part of an “attachment-based” treatment. Died from complications of hyponatremia secondary to water intoxication.
Terrance Cottrell, Jr. (??? 1995 – August ??, 2003)
Terrance was killed by a church elder, who sat on his chest for 2 hours at a time during prayer services. Terrance endured numerous sessions before finally dying of mechanical asphyxia due to external chest compression.
Jessica Albina Hagmann (??? 2001 – August 11, 2003)
Jessica died of mechanical asphyxia due to compression from an adult: lack of blood and oxygen. She was killed by her adoptive mother, Patrice Lynn Hagmann, who used attachment therapy techniques she’d learned from Martha Welch’s Holding Time. Police also seized a copy of Ronald Federici’s Help for the Hopeless Child from the home. Patrice Hagmann’s defense claimed that she used holding therapy on Jessica in order to “calm” her, and that the death had been an accident. However, the autopsy revealed copious signs of physical abuse, including bruises that covered Jessica’s face, scalp, torso and back.
Dennis Merryman (??? 1997 – January ?? 2005)
Dennis was starved to death by his adoptive parents, Donna and Samuel Merryman. Two of Dennis’ adopted siblings testified to how Donna and Samuel carried out their “attachment parenting:” they tied Dennis down in a crib covered with bells and netting, they monitored him whenever he went to the bathroom, they didn’t allow him to wear clothes except for Sundays and holidays and they punished him forcing him to walk up and down stairs until the boy passed out and fell back down them. Medical records showed Dennis had not been taken to a doctor for three and a half years. Doctors who examined his body upon his death stated that his vital organs were so stunted that some could only be considered normal for a 2-year-old.
Nina Hilt (??? 2003 – July 2, 2005)
Nina was beaten to death by her adoptive mother, Peggy Hilt, who claimed that the 2-year old child had driven her to alcoholism–a “habit” that Peggy lied about and kept hidden from everyone, including her husband, up until her trial. On the morning of July 1, 2005, Peggy got drunk and grabbed Nina around the neck, shook her and then dropped her to the floor, where she kicked her repeatedly before dragging her up to her room, punching her as they went. Nina immediately came down with a fever, and started vomiting. The next day Nina stopped breathing. By the time the ambulance got the child to the hospital, she was dead. Joyce Sterkel, an AT practitioner who runs a Montana boarding school for “disturbed international adoptees,” spoke in Peggy’s defense that she “understand[s] how some people end up killing these kids.”
Sean Paddock (??? 2002 – February ??, 2006)
Sean was murdered by his adoptive mother, who also routinely beat her other adopted children as a means of “discipline” prescribed by Michael and Debi Pearl, a couple who publish books recommending the use plumbing supply lines and PVC pipes to “chasten” children. After Sean died in the tightly wrapped blankets his adoptive mother had suffocated him with as a form of punishment, his older sister and brother (whom police noted was beaten so badly that he limped) reported her to the authorities.
Angellika Arndt (March 3, 1999 – May 26, 2006)
As a foster child, Angellika was labeled as a RAD (reactive attachment disorder) kid. She was put into a “control hold” as punishment for blowing bubbles in her milk and laughing during lunchtime. Two staff members at a Wisconsin clinic held Angellika in a prone position face-down on the floor for over an hour and a half. One of them was a man nearly five times Angellika’s body weight; the weight of his body on her upper torso caused her death.
Andrew Burd (??? 2002 – October 3, 2006)
Andrew was murdered by his foster mother, Hannah Overton, who forced him to drink large quantities of salt water mixed with chili spices. Andrew choked and stopped breathing; police involved in the case testified that his foster parents waited nearly three hours before taking him to the hospital. Doctors who examined Andrew’s body noted bruises, sores, lesions and multiple scratches on his face, back and buttocks, along with head injury that appeared to be from blunt-force trauma.
Olivia (??? 2003 – December ??, 2007) and Magnus Bernsdorff (??? 2005 – December ?? 2007)
Olivia and Magnus were murdered by their father, who practiced attachment parenting and parroted AP’s beliefs that divorce and separation from one’s biological mother would turn his children into “psychopaths,” AKA Reactive Attachment Disordered kids (RAD is commonly referred to in AP circles as “Ted Bundy disease”). Despite the fact that the bogus RAD symptoms and diagnosis promoted by Attachment Parenting International wholly differ from the true, factual definition to be found in the DSM-IV, Bernsdorff took them the AP community at their word and shot Olivia and Magnus. Police found Olivia lying on her left side, shot in her chest. Magnus was lying on his back, shot in his chest and right thigh.
Alexis Glover (??? – January ??, 2009)
13-year old Alexis Glover’s body was found in a creek on January 9, 2009, two days after her adoptive mother, Alfreedia Gregg-Glover, reported her missing to the police. Investigation later revealed that this report was false and that Gregg-Glover herself had dumped Alexis into the creek. The death was ruled a homicide, the result of drowning and exposure to the elements. Further investigation revealed how Alexis endured constant abuse from Gregg-Glover, including being stripped naked, denied food and beaten with a stick. School bus drivers witnessed Alexis being forced to walk to the bus in her underwear while her mother videotaped her.
As an adopted foster child, Alexis had been diagnosed as “RAD,” so not only were the multiple reports of abuse disbelieved and ignored even made by third party adults, much of the abuse witnessed was in fact approved by Glover’s attachment therapist, who recommended withholding basic necessities such as food, clothing and use of the bathroom in order to get Alexis to “bond” with her mother. This regimen also approved coercive restraint methods that included tying the girl up with a dog leash.

[...] As to who precisely is to blame here, I don’t think have a firm enough grasp on what happened to pinpoint responsibility just yet, but I do think someone should be looking at not only the relatives some of whom were aware of the boy’s plight and yet did nothing, but also whether or not “attachment” quackery played a role in his suffering, as it has in a number of adoptees’ deaths to date. WHAT KIND OF SICK SOCIETY, WE LIVE IN TODAY, THAT WOULD LET…FULL GROWN ADULTS, KILL YOUNG CHILDREN….. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE IN ANY WAY OR FORM. OUR SOCIAL SYSTEM IN THIS COUNTRY NEEDS A GOOD OVERHAUL…….. WE ARE DOOMED AND GOING TO HELL, IF THE PROFEESIONALS CONTIUE TO LET THIS HAPPEN TO OUR YOUNG KIDS……BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS CAN BE DEALT WITH, MURDERING CHILDREN SHOULD BE A DEATH SENTENCE FOR THE ADULT, WHO DOES….. THIS NOT THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, FAR AWAY FROM IT. CHILDREN ARE OUR HOPE FOR A FUTURE, IF WE ARE KILLING THEM, THERE IS NO HOPE………… AMERICA NEEDS TO WAKE UP AND PROTECT ITS CHILDREN, BUT IT SO MUCH RED TAPE AND GOOD OLD BOYS MENTALITY THAT THE KIDS GET LOST IN THE LANDSCRAPE. DO SOMETHING NOW AMERICA BEFORE ALL THE CHILDREN ARE GONE.

Thank you for commenting, Linda. I appreciate your sentiments, but I must inform you that attachment “therapy” is not restricted to US borders–it also proliferates in Europe, where it exists to this day. It is also practiced in some parts of Asia. I will be making a post about this global atrocity soon. Thanks again.

Andrew Burd’s death had nothing to do with this sick “therapy” for RAD.
If the adoptive mother was guilty in his death (I have some doubts) it was due to a system that was neglectful on all counts. Paperwork was delayed in getting Andrew the help he needed. And therefore the mother resorted to advise she was getting from people with no real credentials. I am not certain if Andrew’s mental condition worsened to the degree that his pica caused him to eat the fatal dose of sodium, or if Hannah Overton “lost it” in her frustration.
Either way, if the adoption agency was on top of this, Andrew might still be alive today.
October 22, 2008 at 5:03 am
Yes, and force-feeding a four-year old child salt water mixed with spices as crackpot “behavior modification” on top of the entirely pseudoscientific RAD diagnosis was completely due to the adoption agency not being “on top of this.” Bad paperwork explains the myriad scratches, sores, lesions and other marks on Andrew’s body, but of course.
This kind of abysmal ignorance is what allows cases like these to proliferate.
If you wish to condemn the adoption agency, then you’d be better off chastising them for releasing a child into the care of someone like Overton in the first place.

I heard a mother in the UK who lost a custody case ,said her son was sent for reports to a child pyschologist. This man reprogrammed the child to go and live with the abusive father .The staff talked of similar tactics . I dare not print his name as the pressure groups of father’s rights will make sure he is found and their children put through the same programme.
Here in the UK families all share their own personal nightmare of closed secret courts who are ruling good mothers out of their children’s lives long term in favour of placements with deadbeat dads.

I found your blog, via T’s Blog http://ungratefullittlebastard.blogspot.com/
I am entirely repulsed beyond words. I knew about so called RAD from a person who blogs about it, and having read her blog, before that I had never even heard of RAD as such, although I had heard of Attachment Therapy from reading about or seeing on TV about those nutjobs that had a heap of foster kids most disabled that they locked in cages and sat on etc.
Since that time I did read more about RAD and what some sickos do in regards to the AT. But NOT this much, I have never seen so much terror on one page, eventuating in Deaths, well except for my blog and others that write about Adoptees that are killed.
I wonder if it is ok with you if I link to this post ?
I am so saddened and sickened that there are people – ADULT HUMAN BEINGS that can inflict this sort of torture on a child. I will NEVER understand this amount of fear and torture. I understand people get frustrated with children, I understand that on the odd time they might lash out , and regret it heavily, but this ? this stuff is pure evil torture and appears to be something that they enjoy doing (because they repeatedly do it) and seems to be like they almost *get off on* inflicting this amount of control over the child.
I’m glad you’re exposing it all on a blog. I hope many people expose it, its something that needs to be removed from our society.

is it not ironic that I get back to this link from a link posting the how wonderful Bryan Post and Heather Forbes are on their :NEW RAD treatment…. which is feeding kids baby bottels at 14 years old and holding them down on air mats, etc…
ugh!
Jane, RAD is not really real, it is made up to get people rich and make people think adopted kids are all damaged goods…
check out the adovcates for children in therapy site…
please stop spreading RAD lies
November 6, 2008 at 11:19 am
@ Rinda – WTF are you on about ? regarding stop spreading RAD Lies ?
Im doing NO such thing. I think its appalling what is going on
November 6, 2008 at 11:21 am
ETA just so we are clear I am not saying I believe in RAD, I am saying I had NEVER heard of the terminology before
I think perhaps you misunderstood what i wrote
Have you read my latest blog post ? have you read any of my blog posts ?
November 11, 2008 at 5:32 pm
And yes, I know RAD is a bogus psychiatric form of abuse for Adoptees, but people abusing children on the pretense that RAD works, which it doesn’t IS real, and that should never be silenced.
November 14, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I was reading down Adopted Jane’s blog and wondering what she was talking about – when I saw it was attachment theory – I let out a gasp.
I have always had my suspicions about attachment disorder and some adoptive parents reliance on it to excuse issues in their own parenting.
This is truly horrifying and sad. God, defenseless children.

Food. This is another area where Attachment Therapy/Parenting (AT/P) proponents talk out of both sides of their mouth. They say to never make food an issue, but they also give numerous examples of manipulating and punishing children with food.
It appears to be a basic belief (and idiotic reasoning) among AT/P proponents that if the child rejects his mother’s love, then he must not be allowed have her cooking, because moms put love into their cooking.
They also claim that a child must form a bond to his current mother before all others. Therefore, there are restrictions on food — especially “bonding foods” — from other sources, as well.
“Awesome moms” may request teachers set a time limit for their child to finish lunch at school and that he not be allowed any shared class treats.
AT/P’s “Awesome Moms” are infamous for what they call “Peanut Butter and Jelly Therapy.”
Nancy Spoolstra, head of “Attachment and Trauma Network” wrote about a P&J+ diet she put her 16-year-old adopted “Attachment Disordered” daughter on for six months:
—-
“I told her in the real world, when you don’t work you don’t eat in the style to which she was accustomed. I said she could have all the peanut butter and jelly, fresh fruit and veggies, and milk she wanted … but nothing else until she found a job. She went six months…
I would fix a great meal…the smell of pork on the grill wafting throughout the house and yard. She would scowl, mope and perfect her victim persona, and periodically she would inquire,
‘Do I need to fix a sandwich tonight?’
‘Do you have a job?’ I would ask.
‘No’ was the whiny reply.
‘Then what do you think?’ I would say… and she would fix a peanut butter sandwich.
…Until our kids emancipate, we have obligations to support them, but that doesn’t have to be steak and potatoes…”
—-
The leading proponent of AT parenting, Nancy Thomas, revealed the depth of her knowledge on nutrition when she wrote about P&J Therapy in an online course *for continuing education credit* for therapists:
“They do not eat with the family. They do not eat my food. They eat peanut butter and jelly.…and they get them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But if I’m out of bread, they get oatmeal. You want to be sure they get a balanced diet, and peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat bread with a huge glass of fresh milk is very balanced.”
Let us not forget the forced gorging.
There is the horrific case of forced water intake that killed 4yo Cassandra Killpack while she was also enduring a “two-week intensive” at the Cascade Center in Utah. http://www.childrenintherapy.org/victims/killpack.html
I talked to a survivor (”S.”) who as a child was handed back and forth between a number of AT/P “therapeutic parents” in Evergreen, Colorado, as a child. S. said children were forced to gorge on any food they were caught eating without permission. If a child took a candy bar, he would either have to eat a pile of them all at once. Alternatively, he might have nothing to eat but candy bars for the next week. S. told me about a small boy who took a cookie without asking and had to eat a whole package of cookies covered in hot sauce.
You would think AT/P was in the business of creating eating disorders.
By the way, S. also told me this “therapist” would lock S. in a closet of the attachment center after Holding Therapy until it was time to go to the therapist’s home. Then when the therapist and her children stopped at a restaurant on the way home, S. would have to stay in the car.
A number of the AT/P survivors I have had the opportunity to talk to say hunger was often the hardest thing to endure, and certainly we have seen a number of high profile criminal starvation cases related to these cruel parenting methods.

Nina Hilt was beaten to death, but Peggy Sue Hilts had not sought AT, or for that matter, even heard of RAD. Mrs. Sterkel may have been an expert witness at the trial, but I do not believe that she was consulted prior to the child’s death.
January 11, 2009 at 7:56 am
KH: If there was no connection to AT whatsoever, then why (as you so cleverly point out) was Sterkel called as an “expert witness” at Peggy Hilt’s murder trial?
Why has the media cast this alcoholic child murderer in such a sympathetic light, as opposed to the 2-year old adopted child she beat to death, if “RAD” is so irrelevant?
Of course Peggy Hilt did not officially utilize AT (her child abuse was informal and fueled by alcohol, ah the good ol’ fashioned way!), but its quack belief system and diagnoses obviously influenced the trial and the public perception of this tragedy in revoltingly inappropriate ways, so don’t be obtuse.

If you go to Adoption UK forum, you will see for yourselves what adoptive parents- chosen by social workers- do to children to force to obey.
One was feeding the little girl the same bowl of cornflakes 5 days in a row, sour milk and mush.
You would not get away with this, if you did it to an animal, but to an adopted child it is somehow accepted.
Another adoptive parent cut the little girls hair off, because it hurt, when having her hair brushed.
I could go on and on, but I just cry bitter tears for the children placed with these controllers.
The techniques being used are used in military camps to BREAK DOWN prisoners.
These techniques are crimes against humanity, and to commit these crimes on innocent children, in order to get control, as SS want, is appauling and must be exposed for all to see.
January 27, 2009 at 9:43 am
Thank you for what you are doing here. The more these things are talked about, the quicker that ordinary people will know about them and then they will stop.
January 27, 2009 at 9:47 am
“Peanut butter and jelly therapy?”
For crying out loud! What the hell do these people think they are playing at?
Giving a child some dinner shouldn’t be turned into some quackery “therapy” – this is insane!
This is control freakery at its very worst.
January 27, 2009 at 10:00 am
Well here’s my idea of how Attachment therapy should really be used:
1) Round up all the Attachment Therapists, make them stand in a theraputic circle of trust, with their hands outstretched, palms up
2) Take one very large tube of extra super strong SuperGlue, squeeze blob into each outstretched palm
3) Tell Attachment Therapists to join hands
There, simple isn’t it? With that lot busy playing a nice theraputic game of Ring a ring of roses the children of the world will be a lot safer!

Just found another victim – http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0209/592502.html
Denied medical care, had to “earn everything” and is now dead. She was reported missing and found a few days later deceased, but until now I knew no details.
This drives me crazy.
February 9, 2009 at 7:01 pm
This is the most horrifying thing that I have possibly ever read.
How can this justifiably exsist in a society that is so apparently obsessed with Human Rights and justice?
I am shocked to the very core of my being, and I will promote any movement against this so called ‘therapy’.
This should not be allowed to continue.
March 31, 2009 at 11:34 am
I can tell you that if this s**t was in my country I would be protesting so fast! It’s hideous, revolting and horrific. I’ve been crying my eyes out whilst reading this page because this stuff should not be happening to kids. They’re kids! Wonderful, annoying, yet rewarding kids. I know I’m preaching to the choir here but COME ON! how could any sane person think this is even remotely ok??? What threat could any of these children possibly have posed to have saddled them with this sort of crap?
Are we not children’s caregivers because we are supposed to protect them? How can people propagate RAD?
My heart just about broke when I read this;
Social-services workers and employees of the guardian ad litem program in the courtroom reacted with relief when Judge Todd Burke sentenced the Salvettis to prison.
One hugged the boy and told him, “Somebody finally believed you.”
Waywardradish please keep your voice being heard for those who aren’t heard. Kia Kaha (be strong)

I am 41 years old now. I believe I was the very first patient of this RAD “rebirthing/compression therapy in Evergreen,CO conducted by Connell Watkins and Foster Cline. I was 12 at the time. Indeed I was a child with behavior problems and this “treatment” was “cutting edge” and they were paid very well for this abuse. It is not therapy. It is torture for which the Geneva Convention would frown upon. It breaks my heart to read these stories and I know EXACTLY what Candace endured. I am glad that Connell Watkins served prison time , not enough , in my opinion. Foster Cline has not. I forgive my parents , as they were trying to help me and were vulnerable to the influence of Watkins and Cline.
Those weekly trips up the canyon to Evergreen haunt me to this day. They got paidverywell to hurt many childeren, some died.
